Week of June 1 and 7th

June 1-all classes are working on the final for social studies. Students selected their own groups to work with and study a Latin American location of their choice (from the list provided to the students).

June 7th-6th grade end of the year field trip.

June 8 all final written papers are due.

June 8, 10 and 11 -social studies presentation. Groups signed up for the day they wanted to present their final to the class.

June 9th Students will complete the time capsule they began at the beginning of the year.

Week of June 1, 2010 AND June 7th

All classes are taking the Math benchmark test this week. This will assist the teachers with student placement for next year, along with assessing the level of comprehension of the material taught this year.

Monday, June 7th-End of the Year field trip to Jungle Jim's. Any student not attending will have a subsitute on Monday for the day.

Tuesday and Wednesday (6/8 and 9) All classes will take their math final. The past few weeks have been spend reviewing and preparing for the final.

Thursday and Friday (6/10 and 11) All students will be working on collecting and graphing data for the science fair on Monday, June 14.

Week of May 10, 2010

We are finally through the Ancient Worlds and will be starting Latin America on Tuesday. Monday is the chapter 7 test for Rome and students will turn in their books.

The red Latin America book will be kept in the class room instead of having students ravel around with them.

Tuesday we will start the book with a lesson about the geography of Latin America. Wednesday students will complete the atlas activity and then we will begin chapter 1.

Cummulative review test will be on Friday, May 14.

Studying chapters 1-9 and practicing problems in those chapters should be done each night to prepare for the test.

The sixth grade students will be bringing home "THURSDAY FOLDERS" starting tomorrow, April 29th.

All tests and important information for parents/caregivers will be enclosed in the folder every Thursday for a signature, to be returned to the homeroom teacher on Friday. If students should forget to return the folder and its contents on Friday their will be consequences for the student. Loss of recess for the first day, second day a call home and a loss of recess, third day a level 2 referral with detention.

Providence Creek Academy teachers are required to keep student portfolios up to date with evidence of student academic progress. It is important that all assessments taken by the students be reviewed, signed by a caregiver and returned for the student portfolio.

All classes will begin Chapter 7 Ancient Rome. Classes will work on section 1 reading and section review then vocabulary. Classes will progress through the chapter and by the end of the week will be completing section 3. All social studies classes are giving their oral presentations and they are great. All classes will be completing oral presentations by the end of the week and we will finish up ancient Greece next week.

The oral presentation is a large part of the third trimester grade for students. Any student that did not turn in the power point project at the end of the second trimester must do so before this Friday so they can present their project to the class.

Social Studies B had their reward party before the break and really enjoyed themselves. Mrs. Bloemker took pictures and made copies for the students. The group shots turned out great. Some photos will be included in the next classroom newsletter.

All math classes are continuing with the area of parallelograms and triangles.

Math A has problems 15-18 on page 449 to complete for homework on Tuesday night. On Wednesday night they will have a worksheet 9-4 to complete.

Math C has the 9-4 worksheet to complete for homework on Tuesday night.

This week we start Ancient Greece in all classes. We will continue Ancient Greece after the spring break-the week of April 19.

The week of April 12 we will take a break from the book and have oral presentations in each class. Students will present their power point project to their class. Schedules are posted in the back of Mrs. Bloemker's room and in the classroom newsletter.

Social Studies B will celebrate their display of great citizenship for the first half of the year with a party on Wednesday, March 31 during their scheduled class time. Any parent of a Social Studies B student that would like to donate a party item or money for pizza, please let Mrs. Bloemker know by Monday, March 29.

Students must bring their flash drive with the power point presentation on it the day they are assigned to present, along with any additional materials or information they will to share with the class about their selected topic.

Each student will have 8 minutes to make their presentation to the class.

All classes will take the chapter test for Aniceint Egypt on Monday, March 8.

The rest of the week the students will be starting Ancient China, Chapter 5. The classes will focus on vocabulary, key terms and key people. Students should read one section of the chapter each evening and be prepared to discuss the section review questions in class the following day.

Tuesday evening's assignment will be to read Section 1 (pages 123-128) so the class may discuss section one review questions on Wednesday.

Wednesday evening's assignment will be to read section 2 (pages 129-133) so the class may discuss section two review questions on Thursday.

Math DSTP will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, March 10 & 11. Students should get to bed early the night prior to each testing day so they are well rested and ready to take the DSTP. Breakfast items will be available in the class for students that want something to eat before testing begins.

All classes are working on Ancient Egypt. This week students did a route map activity involving a caravan, created a graphic organizer for the levels os Egyptian society, worked on a skill building activity, completed a writing assignment about the four accomplishments of the ancient Egyptians, read a story about the Egyptians and answered questions about the reading, reviewed the vocabulary and will play a game called 'Mummy Rummy' on Friday.

Test on Ancient Egypt will be on Monday, March 8 for all classes.

All classes are working on their technology projects. We've had two opportunities now to work on computers during class time to complete research for the storyboards that are due Thursday, February 25. The final power point project (on the flashdrive) is due on March 19th.

This project is a requirement by the State of Delaware for all middle school students. If this project is not turned in on March 19th, the student will receive a 50% for the project. Students were given a power point presentation and a packet of information about the project on January 5. I wanted to be sure the students had at least 6 weeks to complete their research for the storyboards. The power point project will only take 15-20 minutes to complete once the story board is approved. Student will have 3 weeks to complete the power point project once the storyboards are approved.

Students are studying Ancient Egypt in Chapter 3. This chapter will be read mostly for homework so we may have more class time for group discussions and activities.

Week of February 16

Due to the unexpected snow storm the Chapter 2 test on Ancient Worlds has been changed to Friday, February 19.

Also, the storyboards for the technology project originally due February 12 are now due February 25. This is to accomodate those students that do not have computer access at home. We had two class periods scheduled for the computer lab, but due to the snow we were not in school to take advantage of the computer lab. Students will work in the lab before the 25th so they may complete their storyboards.

Tuesday and Wednesday are review days for the chapter test for all classes. Thursday Social Studies A will have an additional review day and Social Studies B and C will be in the computer lab for the technology project.

Students should be actively studying their notes each night for the chapter test.

All social studies classes are working on finding Geo Cleo on page 2-7 in their books. Students are working in groups to answer thought provoking questions on where to find Geo Cleo in the ancient world.

On Wednesday students take a break from social studies to participate in "What's my line?" and career day activity. Students will have a visit from three individuals from the business world and will be given the opportunity to ask questions to determine what line of work each person is in. Once their line of work has been guessed, the class may ask questions about their line of work.

All social studies classes turned in their blue United States and Canada books on Monday.

On Tuesday, all students were issued the gold book: The Ancient World. We will begin working in this book on Wednesday.

During the second trimester students will work on a technology project in social studies. The project will be explained to the students next week and a copy of suggested topics dealing with the ancient world will be given to the students.

All students will need a flash drive stick for this project. Inexpensive flash drives may be found a Walmart, Kmart and Happy Harry's/Walgreens stores. Students should have their flash drives by January 19th.

All students were given their Chapter 5 test grades on Tuesday and their homework is to get their agenda book (test grade) signed by a parent. I am so PROUD of all of the students! Test grades were GREAT! All that studying sure did pay off! Great job 6th grade.

All Classes are finishing Chapter 5. We spent the last week working on the five sections in Chapter 5. We took a written quiz on sections one and two. The students will take an oral assessment on sections 3, 4, and 5. A final test for Chapter 5 will be on Friday, December 18.

Students have written homework for Social Studies is to study each night in preparation for their oral assessment and final chapter test. Homework is written in their agenda books everyday.

Week of October 19th-

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday students are taking their DSTP tests in science and social studies from 8:30am to 11:20am (or until they finish). Then it's off to lunch and recess. The remainder of these days have a limited schedule.

HOMEWORK: Since we are not having all of our classes everyday this week, there will not be any math homework. Students do have a social studies quiz on Friday for chapter 1, section 3.

MATH-students are working on worksheets and math games for decimals and word problem review.

SOCIAL STUDIES-students completed their "KWL" charts for Chapter 1 and review of Section 3 in preparation for the multiple choice quiz on Friday. Students are also starting their "final test" for Chapter 1. Instead of a written chapter test, the students will be creating a current events portfolio. They will have 4 class periods to work on completing this project.

In math class the students are continuing with Chapter 1 working on Exercises in 1-5 and 1-6 problem solving. On Tuesday point cards were sent home to be signed and returned on Wednesday. Several students were given a re-test of Quiz 1/1, 1/2 on Tuesday.

Wednesday's lesson will start with updating each student's check register to record their citizenship grade.

Homework: Practice Sheet 1-5 was sent home withe students on Monday, it is due on Friday.

This week students are working on DSTP prep. The DSTP testing for Science and Social Studies will take place on October 19, 20, 22 and 23. On Wednesday, students will be given a retest of the social studies quiz Chapter 1, sections 1 and 2.

Week of October 5, 2009

All classes are creating Weather Notebooks.

Students are working in groups to complete the notebooks using their books and classroom handouts to complete this assignment.

Each group is given an envelope with cards for different cities around the US and Canada.
Students are to separate the cards and decide whether the city/state on the card is in the East Coast, West Coast, Midwest or Canada.
Once the piles are separated, students will write down the weather information on the cards by coast/canada. This will give the students 4 separate weather reports for the US and Canada.
Next the students will compare the weather on the coasts (East versus West, East versus Midwest, and Midwest versus Alaksa and Hawaii) by either writing a summary of the similarities and differences or creating a VENN diagram to illustrate the information. Students will have 3 more pages for their notebook after completing this task.
Lastly, the students will create colorful and creative construction paper cover for their Weather Notebook.

Students will work on this for the remainder of the week.

Math A, B and C-started section 1-5 Adding and Subtracting Decimals. Students took notes on the 'key concepts' on the section.

Simplify-to simplify an expression is to replace it with the simpliest name for its value. Example: to simplify 4+5, you would write 9

Properties of Addition
Communicative Property of Addition-changing the order of the addends does not change the sum.
Associative Property of Addition-changing the grouping of the addends does not change the sum.
Identity Property of Addition-the sum of 0 and any number is that number.

Students worked in small groups to solve practive problems Exercises A 1-22. As each group completes these problems they will meet with Mrs. Bloemker. Once they have successfully completed the problems, the group will move onto the next assignment. When the next assignment have been successfully completed, the group will take a quiz.

We will work on this material for the remainder of the week.

Students were told on Thursday they would have new seat assignments when they return on Monday. The desks have been reconfigured from rows into groups of four. Students will be grouped by their level/pace. The idea is for all students to be able to work independently and within a group with students that work at the same pace on assignments, projects, etc.

The first week of school the students 'played' math games with foam dice working on their multiplication math facts. We spent a lot of time working on multiplication fluency with single and double digit multiplication. I wanted to get the students thinking about math again after the long summer break.

Last week we began exploring decimals. Students worked in groups with math manipulatives and grid paper to investigate decimals.

This week the students worked on reading and writing decimals, place values and expanding decimals. The students began writing decimals in written form, standard form and expanded form and we compared the three expressions.

Tuesday, 9/22: the lesson began with a life skill-using a check register. All sixth grade students will be filling out a check register to record their PCA bucks earned through their weekly citizenship grade. Homework-Math A and B were asked to complete exercise A, problems 1-8 on Page 10 and Math C was assigned Exercise A, Page 10 problems 9-16.

Wednesday, 9/23: students worked in groups to create their own decimal problems by using dice and dominios. Students were then asked to write those problems in expanded form.

HOMEWORK: On Monday Practice Sheet 1-2 was handed out and given to students to practice the skills we have been working on in class. The Practice Sheet is due Friday, Sept. 25.

We have been working on the United States and Canada in Chapter 1, the activity atlas. We spent the last two weeks working on learning the 50 states in the US. We studied maps and discussed latitude and longitude. Students worked on activities to assist them with learning what physical geography is and what it tells us about the US and Canada.

This week the students began reading Chapter 1, Section 1 Physical Geography. The students created vocabulary study guides to help them learn the key terms in this section of chapter 1.

Glacier-a huge, slow moving sheet of ice
Tundra-A cold, dry region covered with snow for more than half the year in the Artic
Permafrost-permenantly frozen subsoil, thaws only during the Artic summer
Prairie-a region of flat or rolling land covered with grass
Alluvial-the silt that is left by rivers after a flood
Tributary-stream that flows into a larger river
Continental Divide-Rocky Mountains that separate rivers flowing toward opposite sides of the continent.
Irrigation-watering farmland by artificial methods

The students have read chapter 1, section 1 two times. Once silently and once as a read a loud in the class. We discussed the key terms as we read them in the chapter and how they relate to the physical geography of the US and Canada.

HOMEWORK-students are asked to find a current event that discusses the US or Canada. They may look in the newspaper, internet or a magazine to locate an article.
Suggested news sites were:
CNN, Delaware Online (News Journal), New York Post or Washington Post.
